vào 1 giờ sáng hôm thứ Hai (6 giờ sáng GMT) cho một dự luật để 'nuôi' chính
phủ cho tới ngày 8/2.
Lần cuối cùng
chính phủ Mỹ phải đóng cửa là hồi năm 2013, kéo dài 16 ngày.
Các công viên và
đài tưởng niệm quốc gia Mỹ có thể phải đóng cửa Đây là lần đầu tiên chính phủ phải đóng cửa
khi chỉ có một đảng, đảng Cộng hòa, kiểm soát cả Nghị viện và Nhà Trắng.
Với kết quả bỏ
phiếu hôm 19/1 là 50 phiếu thuận-49 phiếu chống, dự luật bổ sung ngân sách

train passengers injured in crash
Sixteen
people have been taken to hospital after a train struck a railway buffer on the
outskirts of Sydney, police say.
The
accident happened at the end of a railway line in Richmond, in the city's
north-west, about 10:00 local time on Monday (23:00 Sunday GMT).A 21-year-old
man suffered a broken leg. Another 15 people were treated for minor injuries,
paramedics said.
Police said
they were investigating why the train did not stop.
"These
people are very lucky - it was chaos - things could have been much, much
worse," said Supt Paul Turner, from New South Wales Ambulance.One witness
who saw the aftermath of the crash said it was a "very distressing
scene"."[There were] very chaotic scenes of emergency services trying
to get people off the platform," Broady Graham told the BBC.

Thai
police have arrested a man alleged to be the head of Asia's biggest illegal
wildlife trading networks.Boonchai Bach, a 40-year-old Thai of Vietnamese origin, was detained in
a town on the border with Laos.He faces up to four years in jail for smuggling
protected animal parts like rhino horns and elephant ivory.Animal trafficking
is a lucrative black market trade. Police said the suspect was
"ringleader" of a "major smuggling syndicate" operating
over a decade.He was arrested on Friday over the smuggling of 14 rhino horns
worth around $1m (£700,000) from Africa to Thailand.
Germany
coalition talks: SPD backs talks with Merkel
Germany's
centre-left Social Democrats (SPD) have agreed to start formal coalition
negotiations with Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservatives.Ever since Germans went to the polls
in September, the chancellor's ruling party has tried to form a government.
Initially
the SPD ruled out going back into government with Mrs Merkel's centre-right CDU
and its Bavarian sister party, the CSU.
But, after
months of stalemate, they voted narrowly for formal talks.

French
prison guards in nationwide strike after attacks
A series
of attacks against prison guards by inmates at institutions across France has
led to a nationwide strike in the country.
Unions have
vowed a "total blockade" of prisons on Monday as their dispute with
the government over safety improvements and wage rises enters its second
week.France's Justice Minister Nicole Belloubet said she would meet union
leaders to try to end the crisis.
Last week,
unions rejected government proposals to end the strikes.
Guards at
prisons across the country, including the high-security institutions
Fleury-Mérogis and Fresnes prison outside Paris, are on Monday taking part in
protests supported by France's CGT union, the Force Ouvrière (FO) union and the
Ufap-Unsa Justice union.
France's
justice ministry has urged union representatives to "resume dialogue
immediately", adding that it was the responsibility of all sides to ensure
that prisons were functioning.The strike comes after a number of guards were
injured in scuffles at several prisons.

Parker has resigned as UKIP deputy leader and called for Henry Bolton to step

Vietnam
jails most senior Communist Party official in decades
A former
Communist Party official has been sentenced to 13 years in jail in Vietnam
after the most high-level trial in decades.Former Politburo member Dinh La Thang was found
guilty of economic mismanagement over losses in state oil firm PetroVietnam.The
trial is part of a showcase crackdown on corruption involving high-profile
energy and banking executives.
Another
executive from the firm, Trinh Xuan Thanh, was sentenced to life.His case came
to international attention last year, when the German foreign
ministry accused Vietnam of illegally kidnapping him from Berlin,
where he was seeking asylum.The trial is seen by some as a showcase of the
Communist Party's fight against corruption.

correspondents say it is also seen by some as a purge of opponents of leading

queued outside St Joseph's Church, where the singer's open coffin is lying in

The
Australian government has announced a A$60m (£34m; $48m) plan to help improve
the health of the Great Barrier Reef.
The reef
suffered mass coral bleaching events in 2016 and 2017, which scientists said were
a result of warmer ocean temperatures.
It has also
endured damage from crown-of-thorns starfish and cyclones.
The new
money, to be spent in four ways, will particularly target starfish and soil
erosion.
Australian
Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said there was a "strong link"
between the coral-eating species and run-off from water pollution.
"While
[the reef] is facing increasing threats, we intend to remain leaders in reef
management," he said.
The new
measures include spending:
A$36m on
farmers to restore vegetation around reef catchments, offsetting erosion;
A$10m for
an "all-out assault" on crown-of-thorns starfish by increasing
culling vessels;
A$6m on
science agencies to develop ways to make coral more "resilient";
A$4m to
employ more field officers to warn about bleaching.It is part of a commitment
by federal and state governments to spend A$2bn on improving the reef over the
next decade.
"We
want to ensure its future for the benefit of all Australians, particularly
those whose livelihood depends on the reef," the government said in a
statement on Monday.
Kabul:
Gunmen shot Intercontinental Hotel diners - eyewitness
An
eyewitness has told the BBC of the terrifying moment gunmen burst into Kabul's
Intercontinental Hotel restaurant on Saturday.
The man,
who is not being named for security reasons, said he was spared after saying he
was an Afghan. "Where are the foreigners?" they shouted.
Fourteen
foreigners are confirmed to have died, along with four Afghans.
However,
some media reports indicate the number of dead could be much higher.
The
interior minister said the recent decision to transfer security to a private
company had been a mistake.
Some 160
people were rescued after Afghan troops fought throughout the night to regain
control of the building.
Three
attackers were also killed in the siege, officials said. Ten people, including
four civilians, were injured.
Kabul
police told the BBC that nine Ukrainians, one German, one Greek and one Kazakh citizen
had been confirmed dead. Two have yet to be identified.
Afghan
airline Kam Air says a number of its employees were killed and some are still
missing.
Iraq
sentences German woman to death over IS involvement
A court
in Iraq has sentenced a German woman to death after finding her guilty of belonging
to the Islamic State (IS) group.
She was
sentenced for providing logistical support and taking part in attacks on Iraqi
security forces.
The woman,
who has not been named but is said to be of Moroccan descent, was captured
during the battle for Mosul last year.Thousands of foreigners have been
fighting for IS in Iraq and Syria.The court said she travelled from Germany to
Iraq to join IS with two daughters, who married members of the jihadist
group.She is thought to be the first foreign woman to be sentenced to death in
Iraq for joining the group, reports say.
Another
German female, teenager Linda Wenzel, was arrested in Mosul at the same time
for belonging to IS.

Nigeria:
Kidnapped US and Canadian citizens freed
Two
American and two Canadian citizens kidnapped in Nigeria on Wednesday have been
freed, police say.
The group,
who were ambushed in a forested area north of the capital Abuja, were found
during a joint military and police operation.Two of their police escorts were
killed during an exchange of fire with the abductors.Kidnapping for ransom is
common in Nigeria, with foreigners and high-profile Nigerians frequently
targeted.The Americans and Canadians were all in good health, AFP quoted a
police spokesman as saying.
They were
abducted while travelling in two vehicles from the town of Kafanchan in Kaduna
state to Abuja.
Two German
archaeologists were abducted in the region in February last year. They were
later freed.
Last
October, four Britons were abducted in the Niger Delta region. One was killed
while three others were released after negotiations.
The
White House has changed its answering machine message to blame Donald Trump's
political opponents for its failure to answer calls.The US is in the middle of a
