Cả Bộ trưởng
quốc phòng của Liên bang Nga và Hoa Kỳ sẽ có chuyến thăm Việt Nam gần như cùng
một lúc để thảo luận về hợp tác quốc phòng về chiến lược cũng như thông thương
vũ khí.

Widodo và dự kiến sẽ sang thăm Việt Nam sau đó.

Theo AFP, trong
chuyến thăm một tuần đến châu Á, ông Mattis hi vọng tăng cường hợp tác quốc
phòng với Indonesia và Việt Nam, khi sức mạnh quân sự của Trung Quốc lớn mạnh dần
trong khu vực.
"Chúng ta đều
có chung vùng Thái Bình Dương - một đại dương với cái tên có ý nghĩa là hòa
bình - chúng tôi muốn thấy nó tiếp tục yên bình, để tất cả quốc gia đang sinh sống
và sử dụng nó có thể tiếp tục thịnh vượng," ông Mattis nói với báo chí
tháp tùng ông trên chiếc phi cơ đến Châu Á.
Mattis sẽ nói
với Lịch rằng Hoa Kỳ coi Trung Quốc là một đối thủ chiến lược của Hoa Kỳ đang
tìm cách làm suy yếu vị trí của Mỹ trong khu vực. Mattis sẽ thảo luận với Lịch
về mức độ mà Việt Nam sẽ hợp tác với Hoa Kỳ để tạo ra một hệ thống liên kết an

Mount Mayon volcano: Philippines fears violent eruption
he
Philippines raised the alert level at its most active volcano, Mount Mayon, on
Monday after fresh activity.
Mayon has
been spewing lava and a cloud of ash since 13 January, forcing more than 40,000
residents to flee their homes in the central province of Albay.
Authorities
raised the alert level to four on a scale of five because a hazardous and
violent eruption is expected within days.

tsunami alert has been issued after an 8.0-strength earthquake was recorded off
the southern Alaskan coast in the US.The quake struck some 300km south-east of
Kodiak at a depth of 10km at 09:31 GMT, the US Geological Survey said.
The US
National Weather Service said the alert was in effect for areas including
California and the coasts of British Columbia and Alaska.The alert told people
to seek refuge on higher grounds in affected areas.The NWS Pacific Tsunami
Warning Center said that, based on the preliminary earthquake parameters,
"widespread hazardous tsunami waves were possible".

flag and blue helmets no longer offer "natural protection" to its
peacekeeping forces, who should not shy from using force if necessary, a
high-level United Nations report says.UN peacekeepers should be prepared to take

peacekeepers have been killed in the past five years. Missions in Africa are

is more than during any other five-year period in history, and 2017 saw the

Avalanche
kills one in Japan ski resort after volcanic eruption
A
Japanese soldier has been killed in an avalanche in central Japan that may have
been triggered by a volcanic eruption.
At least 11
people have also been injured, several of them critically.The eruption sent
rocks raining down over a kilometre-wide area near Kusatsu in central Japan,
say local media.Mount Kusatsu-Shirane, 150km (93 miles) north-west of Tokyo,
erupted on Tuesday but officials are still investigating whether it caused the
avalanche.Images of the volcano showed a vent on its side appeared to have
blown out, while video footage shows a large cloud of black ash and rock being
thrown down the mountainside.Japan's Meteorological Agency has warned people
not to climb the mountain, saying further eruptions cannot be ruled out.At
least 78 skiers were still trapped at a rest house on top of the mountain by
Tuesday afternoon, according to a local town official.
The man who
died was one of six members of the military taking part in an exercise in the

are facing major disruption after a gas leak closed parts of London's West End.
Roads are
closed and Charing Cross station is shut. Police manning the cordons say they

Street, just off the Strand, just after 02:00 GMT.
