Boris Johnson suggests 'bridge' between UK and France
Boris Johnson has floated the idea of new crossing between the UK and France, tweeting that the Channel Tunnel could be "just a first step".
The UK foreign secretary reportedly raised the idea of a new "fixed link" between the two countries during a summit with the French President.
He said good connections were vital to the economic success of both countries.
The idea was greeted with some scepticism. Labour's Emily Thornberry said she assumed it was "not real".
While others used the contentious £350m claim used by Vote Leave during the EU Referendum campaign against Mr Johnson or compared it to Donald Trump's famous campaign promise to build a wall between the US and Mexico.

Calais migrants: UK and France sign new treaty
France and the UK have signed a treaty to speed up the processing of migrants in Calais, French President Emmanuel Macron announced on his first UK visit.
After talks with UK PM Theresa May at Sandhurst military academy, he said the treaty would offer a "more humane approach" and be "more efficient".
But he suggested France would not bow to UK demands to include financial services in any post-Brexit trade deal.
Mrs May praised the "uniquely close relationship" between the two nations.
She said both leaders remained committed to the "Le Touquet" border agreement in Calais - the UK has announced an extra £44.5m to be spent on beefing up Channel border security.
First Carillion task force meeting 'constructive'
The government has described the first meeting of a task force aimed at supporting small businesses and workers affected by the Carillion crisis as "constructive".
The group, chaired by Business Secretary Greg Clark, met on Thursday.
It includes representatives from business, trade unions, construction trade associations and lenders.
Mr Clark said it aimed to give those affected the "information they need in this difficult time".
Carillion went into liquidation earlier this week, threatening thousands of jobs, about 20,000 of them in the UK.
It held about 450 governmental contracts, spanning the education, justice, defence and transport ministries.
Its failure means the government will have to provide funding to maintain the public services run by Carillion.
ATM shake-up could leave many without cash, consumer group warns
Plans to shake-up the UK's ATM network may leave many remote areas with little or no access to cash, consumer group Which? has warned.
Link - which manages the network - says there are too many cash machines in places where they are not needed.
Which? said it could lead to "mass closures" of free-to-use machines.
According to the consumer group, more than 200 communities in Britain already have poor ATM provision, or no cash machines at all.
It said 123 postcode districts did not appear to contain a single ATM, making many consumers reliant on access in nearby villages or towns.

US government shutdown: House backs funding bill and sends it to Senate
The House of Representatives has passed a bill to fund government operations until 16 February - the first move in efforts to avert a government shutdown.
The bill must now be voted on by the Senate, where it faces an uncertain future.
The Republicans do not have enough votes. Backing from at least some Democrats is needed to pass the bill ahead of the Friday midnight deadline.
The last US shutdown happened in 2013 and lasted for 16 days.

Eight people including two firefighters have been killed in storm-related accidents as hurricane-strength winds tear across northern Europe.
Both firefighters were helping with clean-up efforts in Germany when they died.
Many of those killed, in the Netherlands and in Germany, were hit by falling trees and debris. One died in a collision when his van was blown on to the other side of the road.
The storm has now crossed to Poland.
Facing gusts of up to 140km/h (90mph), Germany's train operator Deutsche Bahn cancelled all long-distance services for the rest of Thursday.
Many regional services were also cancelled.
Flights at Schiphol airport in Amsterdam - one of the busiest in Europe - were briefly suspended and two of its three departure halls were closed after roof plates were blown off the terminal building.
A national transport website, VID, reported that at least 17 trucks had been blown over by the strong winds.
The Dutch Railways (NS) and operator ProRail said overhead power lines had been damaged by the wind, as well as some railway tracks.
An alert on the NS website said that "at most, only a few trains" would run throughout the evening.

Sweden will send leaflets to 4.7 million households with instructions of what to do in the case of a war, officials say.
The booklets will also explain how to prepare for terror or cyber attacks and natural disasters.
Their publication comes amid concerns over Russia's military activities and the rise of terrorism and fake news.
Similar instructions were distributed during World War Two, but printing ceased in the 1980s, local media said
Ukraine crisis: Kiev defines Russia as 'aggressor' state
Ukraine's parliament has passed a law defining areas seized by pro-Russian separatists in the east of the country as temporarily occupied by Russia.
The law on the reintegration of the region was backed by 280 MPs, calling Russia an "aggressor" state.
Moscow condemned the move, saying it could only be considered as preparation "for a new war".
More than 10,000 people have died in the eastern Donetsk and Luhansk region since the conflict began in April 2014.
A month earlier Russia seized Ukraine's southern Crimea peninsula.

The plane, carrying 224 people, landed safely at Alice Springs Airport at 17:48 local time (06:48 GMT).
Passengers said the plane had been shaking and making loud noises.
In a statement, Malaysia Airlines said the plane was diverted after it experienced a "technical fault on one of the aircraft's engines".
