On this day in 1517, Martin Luther is said to have nailed 95 theses to the door of All Saints' Church in the town.
The theologian said Christians could not buy or earn their way into heaven but only enter by the grace of God.
His criticism led to a split with the Roman Catholic Church and the birth of Protestantism.
The Reformation caused lasting change in Europe, leading to wars and persecution, but also to greater freedom of religion and expression

Syrian man 'planned bomb attack' in Germany
A 19-year-old Syrian man has been arrested in Germany on suspicion of planning a bomb attack.
The man, identified as Yamen A, is suspected to have "concretely prepared an Islamist-motivated attack using very powerful explosives", police said.
Several apartments were searched in the town of Schwerin, in north-eastern Germany, where he was arrested.
Germany has been on high alert since December 2016 when 12 people died in a lorry attack in Berlin.
Police say the suspect had made a decision "no later than July 2017 to explode a bomb in Germany with the aim of killing and wounding as many people as possible

Local people have long asked visitors not to climb the outcrop, which was known for many years as Ayers Rock.

of the truck hit people on a cycle path in Lower Manhattan.
A 29-year-old man, reported to be an Uzbek immigrant, was shot and injured by police as he left the vehicle.
US President Donald Trump has ordered the Department of Homeland Security to "step up" vetting measures in the wake of the attack.
The suspect reportedly shouted "Allahu Akbar" ("God is greatest") as he left the truck. Officials said it was a terror attack - the deadliest in the city since the 11 September attacks.

Russia to build nuclear power plants in Nigeria
Russia has signed a deal to build two nuclear power plants in Nigeria, as Africa's largest economy seeks to end its energy crisis.
Russian state-owned company Rosatom will build one in the south, the other in the centre, sources at the Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission told the BBC.
The deal's exact worth is unknown, although some reports suggest it is likely in the region of $20bn (£15bn).
Japan suspect ‘killed nine over two months’
A man who was arrested after police found dismembered bodies in his flat has confessed to killing nine people over two months, Japanese media say.
Police had found two severed heads, and the body parts of seven others, at Takahiro Shiraishi's home on Tuesday.
The 27-year-old reportedly said he cut the flesh off the bodies to dispose of them and put cat litter over the remaining body parts to hide them.
Japanese police say they plan to file multiple murder charges.

Two people have been charged in Belgium over an August 2015 attack on a French high-speed train travelling from Amsterdam to Paris.
